There are many truly great things about the seaside town of Greystones, from its position as a culinary hotspot to the many family pastimes to  keep everybody active, from its well-known  Cliff Walk to its  hidden gems, and one thing most locals will agree on, is that the beaches are definitely one of them. There are two beaches in Greystones – the shingled North Beach beside the harbour, and the sand and stone South Beach at the southern end of the town. Greystones actually gets its name from the kilometre-long stretch of grey stones that separates the two.

Just as Greystones enjoys an  easy commute to Dublin city centre and the surrounding areas via a great public transport system and road network, the South Beach is also very accessible by DART, but for those living at SeaGreen, it’s just a short walk from your front door to the sand and the water’s edge.

Awarded a Blue Flag, the half-mile long South Beach is lifeguarded during the warmer months, and also has an adjacent playground, completely refurbished and improved this year, for children who want to take a break from splashing around and swimming in the clean and clear water.

The Blue Flag means that dogs will not be allowed on the beach from June to the end of August, so you don’t have to worry about anybody stepping in something unpleasant while sunbathing or going for a paddle.

Even in the winter months, the South Beach proves popular, with many hardy souls taking to the water for a refreshing dip, such as during the  annual Christmas swim.

One place many locals flock to is the little inlet known as Lady’s Cove that is situated between the two beaches. As well as the clean sand you can catch some rays from, it has great rocks to jump off and lots of opportunities for beachcombing to find interesting bits and bobs from the sea and creatures such as anemones at low tide, so your children will have a great time while you relax and enjoy the weather.

The North Beach at the harbour also provides locals with an array of  water-based activities, with the sailing club, sea scouts and angling club all situated nearby. The recently modernised marina accommodates up to 250 boats and attracts sailing fans from all over the world, so even if you don’t fancy getting into the water, you can enjoy a great day on it.

Greystones sailing club offers dinghy and keelboat sailing courses for children and adults alike, so if you don’t yet know your rudder from your tiller, you can sign up and soon be able to take to the water right from the beach and check out the coast from a different vantage point.

Of course, one thing that makes both of these beaches truly stand out is the jaw-dropping setting. Looking out across the sea, you can take in the views of nearby Bray Head all the way across Dublin Bay to Howth, while behind you stands the beautiful Wicklow Mountains.

Dolphins have been known to come close to shore for a visit, and while you may not see any whales, on a very fine day you can actually make out Wales on the distant horizon.

After a  perfect summer day on the beach, it’s great to know that you can walk the few minutes back into town to sate your appetite at one of the many great cafes, restaurants and pubs. From healthy food at The Happy Pear to crepes at Pierre Grise to pizza from the Delgany Inn, or even a cold treat from the Spendlove ice cream parlour, there’s a fantastic selection on offer to suit any tastes.
